Origins
The AVR architecture was designed by two students on a cold, winter night. Well, it probably took more than one night, but the winter nights in Norway are really long.
Alf-Egil Bogen and Vegard Wollan developed a reduced instruction set computer (RISC) architecture design while students at the Norwegian Institute of Technology in Trondheim, Norway. Both men are now employed by Atmel in Trondheim.
To this day, the official explanation from Atmel concerning the meaning of the acronym AVR is that it means nothing in particular. Theories abound, the most popular postulating it stands for Alf and Vegard’s RISC.
