Turntable Scanner

If you’re like most people, one of the first things that comes to mind when you see a Kinect point cloud, or any 3D scanner point cloud, is that it’s only one-sided. There are a number of techniques that can be used to perform a 360-degree volumetric scan and then reconstruct the implicit surface into a three-dimensional mesh. One way is to use a turntable.

In this chapter, you will build a DIY turntable, connect it to your computer, and scan objects from every point of view. Then, you will learn how to process the scanned data and patch the different point clouds into one consistent point set.
