Advances in very large-scale integration (VLSI) circuit technologies have enabled the implementation of complete computing systems on a single chip. These systems-on-chip (SoC) consist of several subsystems, including one or more processing elements, memory, an interconnect, and special-purpose subsystems. The interconnection subsystem of the SoC must provide sufficient bandwidth to all connected subsystems and must take advantage of state-of-the-art implementation technology to meet functional and performance requirements.
