This appendix gives an overview of the relationship between XML protocol and SOAP, beginning with a bit of history. XML protocol represents an acknowledgment from the W3C that an XML-based protocol is required by the industry. SOAP plays a big role in this effort by establishing itself as the dominant XML protocol currently being used in real-life applications.
