1 Do not expect a lot of zeros above the diagonal in R, even if A was symmetric tridiagonal. Those precious zeros of A are lost for the time being, but they will resurface again somewhere else soon!

2 Note that q1, q2 are necessarily mutually orthogonal, while v1, v2 need not be.
