7.1. Naming and directory servers

In general, a name server is anything that can accept a name and return some related information. There are many different naming services currently in use. Here are some typical examples.

  • DNS (domain name service): takes a hostname and provides an IP number. DNS servers are used by almost all computers that have Internet connections, to map hostnames onto IP numbers.

  • NIS (Network Information Service): takes the name of a user, group, or server and returns various information. NIS is a proprietary system widely used in Unix environments. An NIS server can supply information about the machines, users, and groups on a particular network.
