F.1. Getting the Reference Implementation

The J2EE Reference Implementation (J2EE RI) is available free-of-charge from Sun Microsystems, at http://java.sun.com/j2ee. There are versions for Linux, Solaris, and Windows. There is also information about obtaining the software on CD-ROM, which may be useful if you are put off by the 20 Mb download.

The J2EE RI is not supplied with a Java compiler or runtime engine. It requires Java support compatible with Sun Java JDK 1.3 or later, and I will assume that you are using the standard Sun product, which is available from http://java.sun.com/j2se. I will also assume that it is installed and working, and is set up to be able to run from the command line. That is, if you type

java – version 

at a command ...
