Appendix D. Upgrading and Migration of Mac OS X Server

The concept of upgrading includes taking an existing, working server and installing Mac OS X Server v10.6 Snow Leopard over it to make it current. You can also do a migration in which you install a fresh copy of the server operating system and move data from an earlier version to it.

In the past it has been considered best practice to start with a fresh install of Mac OS X Server and not consider an upgrade. Apple now supports an upgrade path to Mac OS X Server v10.6 Snow Leopard.
