Because an Open Directory master provides services that are critical to the operation of your Mac OS X computers, you may want to set up more than one Open Directory server, to provide redundancy and improve performance.

An Open Directory replica offers the same identification and authentication services as the Open Directory master: LDAP, Password Server, and Kerberos Key Distribution Center (KDC). Those services are synchronized with the master’s services.
