The technologies collectively known as file system permissions are used to control file and folder authorization for OS X. File system permissions work alongside the user account technologies, which control user identification and authentication, to provide the secure multiuser environment of the Mac. File system permissions—just like user accounts—permeate every level of the operating system, so a thorough investigation of this system is required to fully understand OS X.
