What Makes Perl Unique?
Perl was originally designed as an extremely practical language for developing solutions to system administration and text manipulation problems. Originally written for UNIX operating systems, Perl has been ported to every commonly used operating system because of its usefulness in a wide range of applications. As a practical language, it adopted the syntax of many of the more specialized utilities it had been designed to replace—for example, the implicit variable handling of awk and the regular expressions of sed—and this led to the impression that Perl scripts were naturally messy and difficult to read.
