Chapter 6. Managing an Apache Derby Database

Apache Derby has been designed and developed as a database that requires little or no administration or maintenance. In the simplest case, where Apache Derby is running as a small database embedded directly within a Java application, this goal has been achieved: you can run the application for years without ever having to perform a backup or compress the data in the database. In more complex cases, where the size of the database is larger or Apache Derby is running in network server mode, there are some administration tasks that you must consider when you design your application and deployment strategy.
