Common Methods of Faking Water and Fluids

To create a large-scale water effect, like a river or ocean, you can use a combination of the Wave modifier and texturing. For things such as fountains and sprays, particle systems work well.

Figure 14.10 shows a small portion of ocean made from a subdivided plane mesh, two wave modifiers, and a material. The wave modifiers provide the larger scale waves and swells for the water, while the textures on the material create the smaller details. The Wave modifier settings are shown in Figure 14.11. The material and textures are shown in Figure 14.12.
