Lattices

In some ways, a Lattice modifier is a functional opposite of the Mesh Deform modifier. While the Mesh Deform modifier is strictly bound to a mesh, and any movement of the cage mesh will move the character along with it, a Lattice deformer sits in place and only deforms portions of the character that happen to pass within it. Figures 9.359.38 show a simple sphere with a lattice deformer applied to it. As the sphere passes through the lattice object itself, you can see how it warps within the shape of the lattice.
