Multimedia—whether it’s images, videos, or sounds—has become a key driver of mobile device sales. Nowadays, a device must have, at minimum, a camera, and as the technology improves, more and more devices have sophisticated video abilities. Users commonly use handsets to take and display pictures, to record sounds, and even to watch video clips.

The Android Software Development Kit (SDK) provides a variety of methods for applications to incorporate audio and visual media, including support for many different media types and formats. Individual Android devices and developers can extend the list of supported media to other formats.
