LTE Advanced, which stands for Long Term EvolutionAdvanced, is the standard most carriers are moving toward. Aside from the speed benefits, one advantage of this approach is that mobile devices will all share a common standard that is backwards compatible. This makes it more likely mobile devices will be able to play nicely with each other and roam between former CDMA and GSM networks with ease.

The US is still years away from this happening, but this is why phone companies get excited about the possibilities of LTE Advanced.
