Epic Poets Dates (BC) Life and Works
Homer 800 Nothing is known of the life of Homer, not even if there was such a person or whether he wrote both the Iliad and the Odyssey, each epic poem containing around 15000 lines.
Hesiod 700 He was from Ascra in Boeotia. As a shepherd he heard the muses call him to sing of the gods, which he did in Theogony, while in the Works and Days he extolled the virtues of hard work and honesty for men.
Lyric Poets
Archilochus 650 He was an elegiac and iambic poet from Paros. His surviving poems tell us something of his own life and times. He wrote poems of praise as well as of abuse.
