Introduction

Designers have a problem. Actually, we probably have lots of problems, but let’s address one big one. It seems every creative professional or programmer is a freelancer. From the newest graduate to the most seasoned creative, we all seem to have side projects floating around on our to-do lists. In fact, I think nearly every designer I have ever employed over the 11-year existence of my agency, RiSER, has been doing freelance on the side. This work-all-day-then-go–home-and-work-all-night lifestyle is typical in our industry. We love the extra money. We love the pride found in entrepreneurship. But most of all, we love to design and have a hard time saying no when there are creative challenges to be solved.
