The U. S. healthcare industry faces enormous challenges. Its outcomes are the worst of its peer wealthy countries, its efficiency is the worst of any industry, and its customer engagement ratings are the worst of any industry. Although the industry is profitable overall, ranking fourteenth among the top 35 industries,1 it has had difficulty in converting these challenges into business opportunities to do good by improving the health of its customers while doing well for its stockholders.
