Chapter 25 Green Engineering

Green engineering can be defined as engineering for the environment. In terms of chemical engineering and chemical process design, green engineering means design for reduction of emissions, design to eliminate particularly hazardous chemicals, design to minimize the use of natural resources, and design to minimize energy usage.

Several books have been published on green engineering and pollution prevention [1,2,3]; therefore, only a summary of the bare essentials is possible in one chapter. The reader desiring a more in-depth treatment should consult these references.
