Probably the first video game I ever played was the classic Defender, made by Williams Electronics back in the ’80s. The game scared a lot of people because of the complexity of its controls—there were loads of buttons together with a vertical joystick—and to play the game well, you had to master all of them. But once you did, it was very rewarding.

Watch anybody play a video game. It’s not just their heads and hands that control the interaction; their entire bodies are immersed in the experience.
