21. Where’s All My Stuff Gone?

Do you remember the television show Through the Keyhole? For those of you who don’t live in the U.K., the premise was that Lloyd Grossman trawled around a mystery celebrity’s house while a panel of other celebrities back in the studio tried to work out who lived there, based on paraphernalia in the house that provided clues. All the stuff in the celebrity houses—pictures, souvenirs, books, records—wasn’t just stuff. These were things that the celebrities either already had in place or had placed there for the TV crew in order to convey certain images about themselves.
