Chapter 9. The Power Is in the Trim

Trimming is the most powerful part of editorial as well as the most misunderstood. We continue to encounter editors who don’t know how trimming works. If you’re a “razor and delete” editor, we hold nothing against you. If your clients are happy and you deliver shows on time, then you’re a great editor!

But there is truth to the statement “Shows aren’t ever finished; they’re abandoned.” There’s always something more that can be done; edits adjusted for timing and rhythm, and shots slipped to create better synchronicity. Great editors know the ins and outs of trimming so they can quickly finesse their timelines.
