Chapter 9

Tuning in to leadership

My mother is a great pianist and always has been. Her pet hate is a piano that is out of tune — to her it’s an abuse of power. She knows that music when played well can move mountains and change the feeling in a room dramatically. To this day she travels to retirement homes and with a merry bunch of singers lightens the mood of the residents. She is an amplifier.

This lifelong love of piano means that as a child I got to watch tuners adjust pianos in church halls, our home and wherever Mum might play. She simply won’t play on a piano out of tune.
