When Alex Dejong was forty-four years old, doctors gave him a grim prognosis: he had developed a brain tumor that was crushing his optic nerve, causing him to go blind. Dejong was devastated. His loss of vision threatened to destroy his longtime career as a professional photographer, taking away his gift for seeing the world in a different light.

Fortunately, the blindness sunk in gradually, so Dejong had time to think and adapt to the handicap. First, he lost his peripheral sight, maintaining only his central vision.
