Waxing, Encaustic, and Resins

8.1  Waxing for Paper Negatives

In Chapter 2 we talked about using transparency film to print negatives for use with alternative photographic processes. Another option is to print negatives to regular copy paper and then apply wax so that it becomes translucent. This can be accomplished by using a block of beeswax and a hairdryer. Heat up the block on one end until it starts to melt and rub it onto the print. Once a fair amount of wax is applied, continue to use the hairdryer to melt and blow the wax around until it is thin and even over the entire print area. Other artists have used things like cooking oil, but that can go rancid over time.
