Conclusion
There have always been three ways to read a book such as this. The first, and personally preferable, is to read it cover to cover. Somewhere on some page lies a rough nugget of thought that will resonate for a specific reader who happens upon it. That thought will become their Rubber Chicken and give the journey meaning. Enough readers find their own thought nuggets among the pages and the book will have been worth writing.
The second approach followed me from graduate school. When reviewing materials in the social sciences you became adept at reading the first and last paragraph and subsequent topic sentences of each chapter.
