Chapter 32Luck Makers Seek Out New Experiences and Find Opportunities Wherever They Go

“Awake?”

Five minutes later.

“Got a lot of good ideas. Wanna run some by you.”

Two minutes later.

“Oh btw . . . I’m still in the tourney.”

Those were the three messages from Owen that Sam discovered on her cell phone when she awoke. That was good. Sam knew Owen and human nature enough to know that if there had been no messages from him, that would have meant he was out of the tournament. The fact that there were three messages must mean that he was still in a pretty decent position. Or maybe he was just surviving. Who knew? She’d go see him play today. It was a big day. Eighty-five players were going to be narrowed down to just 27. Only three tables of players would be left standing by the end of the day. It was incredibly unlikely that Owen was going to make it that far, so she could be there to make him feel better once he got knocked out.

“Awesome! You’re gonna hear me cheer today!”

She immediately regretted the text as soon as she hit send. That was a little too chipper. Too optimistic. Too something.

There was no end time given for today’s round of play—just a start time of 11, an hour break for lunch at 3 P.M. and a dinner break at 10 P.M., with a few shorter breaks in between. Sam thought about how Owen could end up playing another 12-plus hours of poker today and shuddered.
