Sam threw the remote off the bed. She’d canceled her cable subscription a couple of years ago and didn’t regret it. This junk was a good reminder of that smart decision.

She looked at the clock. 6:30 P.M. Her stomach rumbled. She’d been cooped up inside the hotel since leaving the airport. She had settled for the one-hour seaweed bath at the spa—their only available opening that day—and a 30-minute run at the gym. That was pretty much it. She needed something to eat. She’d hardly eaten all day.

Sam had spent enough time on the road to understand the golden rule of eating alone—that when you’re full of self-confidence and eagerness, you’re never really eating alone.
