Afterword

The knot on the cover of this book is a Carrick bend. It's a figure-8 knot, thus reflecting the eight essential lessons for building a culture of ownership that are described in this book. But the knot itself is also a beautiful metaphor for the book's main theme. A Carrick bend is used to securely bind two ropes together as in the way that a culture of ownership creates intense bonds of loyalty between organizations and the people who work there. It is a very stable binding that is also aesthetically beautiful in the manner of the great companies whose founding leaders you've met in this book. You might have seen it in macramé artwork without having recognized it as a metaphor for a great organization!
