The player walks into a bot’s line-of-sight. How long should it take for the bot to fire at the player? It’s an easy problem to solve—you could just make up a number—but it’s not an easy problem to solve well. If the bot reacts too slowly, it’s not as exciting as playing against a human opponent. If the bot reacts too quickly, the player will accuse your AI of cheating. Moreover, if you simply plug in a number without taking into account variables such as how far away the player is, your AI will seem both unintelligent and like it’s cheating.
