Sometimes you can really only validate a design or a feature when you see it in the flesh. Comps look great on paper but often fail to transfer with such impact in the browser, particularly on pages that pull stock product images from a database. Interactivity can be described, but only when it’s built can it truly be experienced. Innovative concepts sound great in the brainstorming session, but what will they be like in practise? A prototype can be treated as a spike to address these questions, provide the team with a facsimile vision, and reduce the need for rework based on changes to the UI.
