In Summary

One criticism from the experience design community is that agile can be a bull in a china shop, charging headfirst into building without checking the facts first. The agile community can retort that the value of design is only in working software. By applying a lean and agile mindset to research and discovery, it is possible to do just enough research to start the project successfully rather than be paralysed by research inertia. The three i’s—intentions, insights, and implementation—provide a framework for doing it in a lightweight and collaborative way, bringing back the findings to a shared project space to analyse and synthesise the findings.
