The incidence of both physical and verbal aggression is of wide concern. In the minds of the mass media and the general public it is often associated with mental illness. However, although violence can be associated with florid symptoms of a psychiatric disorder, this is in fact rare. More commonly, severe aggression is associated with a diagnosis of personality disorder and with alcohol or substance abuse.
