Taking a Coaching Approach to ROI

ROI—return on investment—has recently taken on a negative connotation for many practitioners in the field of learning and coaching. Evaluating ROI for coaching initiatives is viewed as time-consuming, expensive, and difficult to do, akin to setting up a big science experiment in an organization with variables, statistics, equations and working with dreaded spreadsheets. Now though it’s true that some in the field of evaluation do approach ROI in this way, it does not have to be this way. In fact, taking a coaching approach to ROI evaluation not only offers an alternative approach to the “science experiment,” it is a more powerful approach that has proven to be faster, cheaper, and easier to do.
