Soft polymer nanocomposites and gels

K. Haraguchi,     Kawamura Institute of Chemical Research, Japan

Abstract:

This chapter describes polymer nanocomposites with organic/inorganic network structures: nanocomposite (NC) gels and soft, polymer nanocomposites (M-NCs). NC gels and M-NCs are synthesized by in situ free-radical polymerization in aqueous systems and in the presence of exfoliated clay nanoplatelets. We describe the optical, mechanical, and swelling/deswelling properties, and the characteristics of optical anisotropy, polymer/clay morphology, biocompatibility, stimulus-sensitive surfaces, micro-patterning, etc. M-NCs have improvements in optical and mechanical properties, including ultra-high reversible extensibility and well-defined ...
