Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as functional fillers in polymer nanocomposites

Abstract:

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are lamellar inorganic solids with a brucite-like structure similar to hydrotalcite, where the partial substitution of trivalent for divalent cations results in a positive sheet charge, compensated by anions situated in the interlayer galleries. Their layered structure enables the intercalation of polymer macromolecules, in some cases resulting in the exfoliation of their sheets, and hence in the formation of polymer nanocomposites.
