Abstract
This chapter discusses two types of molten salt batteries, the sodium-sulfur (Na-S) battery and sodium-metal halide (ZEBRA) batteries. Both types are based on a β-alumina solid electrolyte and a molten sodium anode. This chapter first reviews the basic electrochemistry and materials for various battery components. It then describes performance of state-of-the-art batteries and future direction in materials development for these batteries.
