Mixers and Modulators in Wireless Systems

Introduction

Mixers (or modulators) are some of the most important functions in a radio transceiver. Almost all radio architectures use mixers to convert the carrier frequency of a wanted signal from one range to another for various reasons. The requirement for a mixer was first identified with the development of the superheterodyne architecture, wherein it was shown to be advantageous to translate the incoming RF to a lower frequency in order to make the required channel filtering practical and the main amplification more efficient. These motivations still hold good today.
