The .NET framework version 1.0 was first released in early 2002; Microsoft has since released several new versions (.NET 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5) with exciting enhancements. Most of the changes lay in making framework enhancements, while the CLR experienced smaller and more surgical changes as part of each release (with the exception of 2.0). The latest upcoming version of .NET is version 4.0, and as part of this release the CLR has undergone major changes in the area of reliability, performance, and feature enhancements.
