Membrane electrolysers for hydrogen (H2) production

Abstract:

Ion-conducting membrane materials are used in electrolysers for the dual purpose of carrying electric charge between electrodes and separating the products formed at each electrode. The aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of the main membrane materials and associated technological processes. After a brief introduction, the basic principles of electrolysis are introduced in Section 18.2. The main membrane materials (chemical composition and ion-transport properties) are described in Section 18.3 and the main physical properties are discussed in Section 18.4.
