Membranes for advanced biofuels production

S. Curcio,     University of Calabria, Italy

Abstract:

Bioenergy is regarded as the utilization of biomass as starting material for the production of sustainable fuels. First generation biofuels, primarily produced from food crops and oil seeds, however, are limited in their ability to achieve the desired targets for biofuel production, climate change mitigation and economic growth. These concerns have increased interest in developing second generation biofuels produced from non-food feedstocks. The present contribution is intended to present an overview of the application of membrane processes and, particularly, of membrane bioreactors in bioenergy, pointing out the engineering aspects related ...
