Most of the people I've talked to started to learn JavaScript because they wanted to do image rollovers. An image rollover is when your mouse cursor moves over an image and that image changes. Most designers use this trick for navigation, so the user knows that their cursor has highlighted a certain menu choice. This ability to change what's on an HTML page after it had already loaded entered the world in 1996 with Netscape 3, and people have been using it ever since.
