Dividing the Network into Pieces

Depending on the topology (both logical and physical) of your network, the division may take place along geographical boundaries, departmental lines, or the hierarchical structure itself. Figure 8-2 shows a proposed partition of the sample network.

The most straightforward partition is along hierarchical lines. (The same principles can be extended to networks fragmented along different lines.) The distribution layer will always connect to the core at different points. This, along with the fact that it is at these junctions where summarization takes place, makes implementation of a BGP core ideal.
