INTRODUCTION: THE PROBLEM
Transition from adolescence to adulthood in contemporary societies is generally recognized as a difficult and complex task for young people. One area of major concern is the youths’ ability to join the labor force and function as productive members of their society. In the last three decades this problem has received increasing attention from both policymakers and researchers in the United States and other industrial societies (Betsey, Hollister, & Papgeorgiou, 1985; Jenkins, 1983) because of its growing magnitude.
