Editing Smart Objects

To edit the layers that make up a Smart Object, either choose Layer > Smart Objects > Edit Contents, or double-click on the Smart Object's thumbnail image in the Layers palette. The contents of the Smart Object will appear in a separate document window where you can edit the individual layers within the Smart Object using any of Photoshop's tools. Once you've finished modifying the Smart Object, type Command-S (Mac) or Ctrl-S (Windows) to save the changes and update the parent document that contains the Smart Object.

Choosing Layer > Smart Objects > Replace Contents will allow you to replace the entire contents of a Smart Object with the contents of a file on your hard drive. This is useful when working with Camera Raw ...
