Adjusting with Levels

You can also adjust the appearance of a Layer Mask (as long as it contains shades of gray) by choosing Image > Adjustments > Levels. The sliders in the Levels dialog box (Figure 15.67) will do the following to your image:

  • Upper-left slider: Forces the darkest shades of gray to black, which will make more areas transparent.

  • Upper-right slider: Forces the brightest shades of gray to white, which will make more areas opaque.

  • Middle slider: Changes the transition from black to white and therefore changes the transition from opaque to transparent.

  • Lower-left slider: Lightens the dark shades of gray, which will make transparent areas appear more opaque.
