5. Tagging and Metadata

Metadata is information about data. The Dewey Decimal Classification System, which established the modern library system in the 19th century, is a great example of metadata at work. The revolutionary system categorized books by their content instead of their physical features (height and date of acquisition), thus giving people the ability to easily find books by subject. Even though the system continues to be updated, it has proven to be a fundamentally sound standard.

Metadata management is a core feature of any WEM system. It allows content to be stored, organized, and managed so it is easily found and targeted online.
