Dreamweaver behaviors generate JavaScript and CSS to provide tools like browser detection scripts, pop-up messages, and effects. With CS4, Adobe continues the process of evolving away from behaviors, which were inherited from previous versions of Dreamweaver. Instead, Spry widgets provide many features, like form validation scripts, that used to be handled by behaviors (see Chapter 11, “Defining Spry Validation Widgets” for form validation techniques in Dreamweaver CS4).

That said, Dreamweaver behaviors continue to be supported and still provide the best way to open a new browser window, create a pop-up box, or apply effects like shrink or fade.
