Chapter 8. Lobby System

ONCE YOU HAVE a multiplayer game, you’re going to have to figure out a way to allow players to play it. This is where a lobby system can help. A lobby system, sometimes just called a game lobby or just a lobby, is used to help players get into a multiplayer game. Lobbies can be set up to function and to display information in many different ways.

In this chapter, we’ll look at common lobby-system features and see visual examples from a well-made multiplayer Flash game lobby system. We’ll show a common workflow for people getting into and back out of a game, and we’ll break down the steps of that workflow into four flow states. Finally, we’ll look at a simple lobby system created for this chapter.
